How did the state get the name karnataka ?
What is the meaning of it ?

Here is something that I tried to find out and the fruit of the result. The German missionary Rev. F. Kittel during the old british rule writes about the term. Karnataka originated from the two old kannada words, "Kar" and "nadu" which means black and land which means the black cultivated country referring to the black soil or cotton soil.
The sanskrit name of the state is "karnata" which means the same. Kannada is the main language of the region. other languages that originate from the same ancestor are kodava, badaga, tulu, konkani and soliga.
Few other references also suggest that the word "karnataka" was derived from old kannada "karu nadu" which means elevated land which is probably due to the hilly areas and western ghats in the region. The word karnataka has been mentioned in bhagavadgeetha and in other puranas. The mentioning of the word "karnataka" is more importantly in "Halmidi" script which describes karnataka as the land between kaveri and godavari and calls as "kannada - desha".
I tried to find out why Karnataka has its own flag as well. Here is what i've found, di-colour flag with red patch and yellow patch has its origin from a political party called "kannada paksha" which did not survive but gave the flag which when on ahead to become the karnataka flag. This is something to cheer about for a Kannadiga. What a Language Kannada could be to influence many other languages in the south and in north as well. Many a great people wrote about kannada praising, singing Hacchevu kannadada deepa, cheluva kannada naadu, huttidare kannada naadalli huttabeku. Regrettably the beauty that the language has got has been forgotten by the young generation offering the lame excuse of economic and social growth and improvement of life in cities.
